Vocational Routes into Higher Education
Vocational Routes into HE is an e-learning resource developed for use in PSHE or for career guidance and is aimed at full-time and part-time students undertaking post-16 vocational programmes but is relevant for all 14-19 year olds. Developed by the University of Derby and Derby City Council in partnership with Aimhigher and Derby City schools, it will support young people's understanding of Higher Education and the issues surrounding it. Its aim is to encourage students in this age range to consider Higher Education seriously.
The resource covers such topics as:
- Full-time and part-time HE finance
- Choosing the right course
- Applying to university
- Study skills for HE
- On-line learning and how it can be used
It will also help vocational students develop and enhance skills such as; self-reflection, time management, electronic research, and self-directed learning and will give them the practical knowledge base for applying to Higher Education programmes and for becoming successful Higher Education students.
The resource is informative and interactive and contains a mix of information, video clips and student-led exercises. It has been developed to be used either as a whole resource, with students working through each module in turn, or as individual exercises to be signposted to students with specific queries about Higher Education.
The aim of the resource is to raise awareness of higher education options for vocational students, help prepare them for life as Higher Education students and to encourage those who might not have thought of continuing their education to consider it as an option.
